The US president tried to lure the North Korean leader and encourage him to hold the summit between the two sides by giving him guarantees to stay in power if he gave up his country's nuclear program.
In an attempt by Trump to restore the approaching North Korean summit, he told reporters that if the meeting succeeds, Kim will get "very strong guarantees, he will be in his country and he will lead them, and his country will be very rich."
In contrast, the US president warned the North Korean leader that he will face the fate of the late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi if diplomacy fails.
After weeks of diplomatic rapprochement, Pyongyang suddenly threatened to withdraw from the June 12 summit, blaming the US demand that it give up "unilaterally" nuclear weapons.
Trump said China had a hand in Kim's rotation, saying it may have come at the request of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
