Moody's: Dollar strength increases credit risk in emerging markets

    2018/06/28 13:40

(Encyclopedia of this Day News | Iraq News ) - Direct: agency "Moody 's " reported credit rating that the US dollar 's strength will increase credit risk in emerging markets.

The strength of the US currency since mid-April has led to a sharp decline in foreign exchange reserves in a number of emerging markets, increasing the credit risk of countries in need of large external financing, the agency said in a report on Wednesday.

The report included a number of the most vulnerable countries against the strength of the dollar, such as Argentina, Ghana, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Zambia.

Chile, Colombia, Indonesia and Malaysia are also at risk from the dollar's rise, but financial and industrial barriers are reducing risk over the short term, the report said.

Moody's said Brazil, China, India, Russia and Mexico were among the least vulnerable to tightening external financing conditions because of their low dependence on foreign capital flows.

Emerging markets, which have been subject to severe shocks to external financing conditions in the past, are likely to face the same fate now if previous shocks do not alter their reliance on external financing.

Emerging market currencies have suffered strong losses against the dollar since the beginning of this year, with the US interest rate rising at an accelerated pace over the past period.
