US President Donald Trump said the aim of Iran's sanctions was to put the regime in Tehran in the face of a choice between changing its approach or facing the deterioration of its economy.
Trump stressed that US action was directed against the regime and not against the long-suffering Iranian people.
Six months after Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, despite Iranian protests and criticism from European allies, Russia and China, the United States on Friday officially re-imposed the second tranche of sanctions on the country from Monday.
Washington re-imposed the first tranche of sanctions in August, and the US decision means that all states, entities or foreign companies are banned from entering US markets if they decide to proceed with the purchase of Iranian oil or continue to deal with Iranian banks.
He explained that this has led to the exclusion of goods such as drugs and food from the sanctions "for a long time."
The White House called the sanctions "the most severe sanctions ever adopted" against Iran.
The Republican president said he was ready to meet the leaders of the Islamic Republic to negotiate a comprehensive agreement based on the fulfillment of 12 US conditions, notably the imposition of tougher restrictions on Iran's nuclear capabilities than contained in the 2015 agreement, restrictions on the proliferation of Iranian ballistic missiles and what Washington considers "Destabilizing Iranian activities" in many Middle Eastern countries such as Syria, Yemen and Lebanon.
"We remain ready to reach a new, more integrated agreement with Iran," Trump said.
