A military court in San Diego, California, has tried to prosecute Edward Gallagher, a special Marine officer in the Navy, who is accused of war crimes in Iraq.
The facts attributed to Gallagher to 2017 occurred in Mosul, the second largest city of Iraq, where US forces were fighting alongside its Iraqi counterpart to restore neighborhoods of the city from the grip of a supporter.
In May of 2017 Iraqi forces captured an armed boy with a leg injury and appeared to be about 15 years old.
According to statements by two members of the Nivi Siles unit and Warda in the indictment, Gallagher approached the prisoner without saying anything and stabbed him time and again with a knife in his neck and chest until he was prepared as a doctor recommended treatment methods for the boy.
Gallagher, 40, who is accused of murder, attempted to kill two civilians with a sniper rifle, and obstruction of justice, faces life imprisonment if found guilty of the charges against him.
According to a report in the New York Times, Gallagher was proud of his unit's number of people killed, including women.
The arrested officer, Gallagher, denies the charges against him, while some Americans still consider him a national hero.
