BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An
Iraqi commander and a US Marine testified in a naval special forces trial on Thursday and confirmed they had not seen the platoon leader stab a wounded detainee in the neck, denying the war's main charge.
After the oath, Major General Abbas al-Jubouri testified before the seven-member jury on the second day of defense testimony at the military trial of Special Operations Commander Edward Gallahar.
Contrary to the previous testimony that Jalahar or a paramedic in his team deliberately caused the death of one of the elements during his detention, Jabouri said that "the Special Forces of the Navy did everything in its power to save the life of the young fighter."
"Help him. They did their best to save him. "
The same story was echoed by Sergeant Giorgio Cirillo, an intelligence officer in the Gallahar platoon who testified after Jabouri.
Kirillo said he was also present at the time when the captured Iraqi fighter was alive at the site of the American platoon and appeared to have died of serious wounds sustained during the fighting and not as a result of any ill-treatment.
Ghalahar, 39, a veteran soldier and twice awarded the bronze star medal, is accused of murdering an Iraqi prisoner who was referred to his unit for medical treatment by stabbing the young man in the neck several times.
He is also accused of attempted murder, obstruction of justice and other crimes, including illegal photographing with the body of the dead prisoner.
