Experts: Turkey is playing the water card against Iraq and Syria
Experts and concerned parties have warned of the drop in the level of the Euphrates River, stressing that Turkey is playing the water card against Iraq and Syria.
Dr. Shukri Al-Hassan, an expert in the environmental field, said during an interview with PUKmedia : The Euphrates has suffered greatly from its low levels for a long time, so what about the current situation in light of droughts, climate changes and giant dams on the Turkish and Syrian side, explaining that the furnace suffers because its course is long and passing In many cities, and the impact of Turkish dams is great.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had warned two days ago: that the level of the Euphrates River has decreased by five meters for the first time in history due to the Turkish side blocking the river’s water so that it does not exceed 200 cubic meters per second, which is a flagrant violation of the agreement signed between Syria and Turkey in 1987 ; Turkey has committed to release at least 500 cubic meters per second, to be shared by Iraq and Syria.
The Syrian Observatory warned of an imminent disaster threatening the lives and livelihoods of more than three million Syrians who depend on the river for drinking water, electricity and irrigation.
Suleiman Arab, the co-chair of the Municipality and Environment Authority in the Jazira region, told PUKmedia : The regions of northeastern Syria are facing a humanitarian catastrophe due to Ankara cutting off the Euphrates water releases, pointing out that hundreds of thousands of hectares of water have been severely damaged, the electrical sector and the most important thing is the citizens' need for safe drinking water. .
He added: The releases of the Euphrates water from Turkey are 500 cubic meters, of which 200 cubic meters per second are for the regions of Syria, and 300 cubic meters for Iraq, noting that the unjust decision violates joint agreements between Damascus, Ankara and Baghdad.
He stated that Turkey is using water against the Kurds, calling on the United Nations and international organizations to pressure Ankara, to avoid an imminent humanitarian disaster.
And, water expert Shukri Hassan, said that Iraq does not have strong pressure cards on the Turkish side, pointing out that Ankara is playing the water card against Baghdad and Damascus, and therefore we must prepare to face a great water shortage in the absence of a policy capable of negotiating to obtain Iraq's water rights.
He stressed that Iraq is on the verge of a drought that extends for a period of 5 years, in light of the deteriorating water reality.
Activists on social media circulated sad pictures of the Euphrates River, after its level fell to less than half.
It is noteworthy that Turkey has built 5 giant dams on the Euphrates as part of the Al-Ghab project, which it began working on in the 1970s, and work is still underway on two other dams.
Among the dams built on the river is the giant Ataturk Dam, which was completed in 1990. The storage capacity of the dam lake is 48 billion cubic meters.
