The Adviser to the Prime Minister for Elections Affairs, Hussain Al-Hindawi, confirmed on Wednesday (May 12, 2021) that security risks, regardless of their nature, will not push the government to postpone the holding of early elections scheduled for next October.

Al-Hindawi said, in a statement to IQ NEWS, that "things are going on towards holding the elections on the date set for them, which is the tenth of next October," indicating that "the election commission received the names of the candidates and alliances who will participate in these elections."

He added, "The election battle has begun, and what is rumored about postponing the elections is a legitimate viewpoint and fears, but the elections will take place on time."

He pointed out that "the electoral process is always threatened in terms of security and in the whole world, but Iraq held elections at a time of al-Qaeda, terrorism, sectarianism and others, and therefore, despite the presence of security dangers, they do not hinder the electoral process."

He pointed out that "the government is obligated to provide the appropriate security environment to hold the elections, and it has confirmed its intention to do so more than once."

The deputy of the Al-Fateh Alliance, Abdul Amir Al-Mayahi, said in a statement to IQ News, yesterday, Tuesday, that information received by the government about the existence of "scenarios with external parties" to inflame the Iraqi street 3 or 4 months before the elections to prevent them from taking place on the specified date.

The assassination of activist Ihab Al-Wazni in Karbala, last Sunday, prompted the Communist Party, MP Faiq Al-Sheikh Ali, and emerging political movements to announce their withdrawal from participating in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The Electoral Commission closed the door to registering political alliances and sent the names of candidates for scrutiny in the relevant departments, while the Supreme Committee for Election Security issued new directives today that included prohibiting the use of wheels and government institutions for electoral propaganda and not blocking streets or squares to conduct activities of this kind.
