Shafaq News/ Secret documents revealed that the giant telecommunications company may have paid bribes to ISIS in order to continue selling its services after the militants took control of large parts of Iraq, according to "The Guardian" newspaper.
And investigations within the company confirmed the existence of other violations, including the payment of "bribes and kickbacks", "fraud and embezzlement" and the use of smuggling methods to bypass the official Iraqi customs authorities.
Investigations also found that the company had endangered its contractors and kidnapped by militants.
In addition to findings related to alleged payments to ISIS, investigations have uncovered allegations that the company was involved in corruption in at least 10 countries across four continents.
This could indicate a much broader pattern of wrongdoing by Ericsson than the telecom giant publicly acknowledged in 2019, when it concluded a $1 billion settlement with the US Department of Justice.
Headquartered in Stockholm, Ericsson employs 100,000 people and sells telecom equipment in 180 countries. It also plays a leading role in developing the next generation of 5G mobile technology in the UK.
Two weeks ago, Ericsson's stock price plunged 14% when it discovered that a media outlet had obtained classified reports of investigations within the company, and issued a public statement acknowledging that "serious compliance violations" had been committed in Iraq between 2011-2019.
Since then, the telecom company has been preparing for the full disclosure of the reports, which were leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) who then shared them with media partners including the Washington Post and the Guardian.
The investigators concluded that it was possible that the multinational company was involved in directing bribes to ISIS to allow its products to be transported through parts of Iraq after the terrorist organization took control of it.
According to investigators, the bribes were paid through a fund managed by contractors working for the company.
In a statement, the company admitted that its employees had committed "serious" violations in Iraq, including failing to pay taxes between 2011 and 2019.
"Although there has been no conclusive confirmation of bribery, facilitation payments or possible illegal financing of terrorism, there is evidence such as emails indicating illegal customs bypassing and passing through ISIS-controlled areas of Iraq," the report said.
They emphasized that there was no evidence that Ericsson employees were directly involved in any payments to the Islamic State.
According to the leaked documents, the value of suspicious payments in Iraq to the company amounted to about $ 37 million, in addition to giving officials gifts and vacations.
Ericsson said it published the statement because it was "committed to transparency". However, the telecom giant refused to answer multiple questions from the newspapers.
The company also admitted that it paid tens of millions of dollars in corrupt transactions through shell funds between 2000 and 2016 in five countries: Djibouti, China, Vietnam, Indonesia and Kuwait.
But the leaked documents list evidence of allegations of corruption and misconduct in 10 other countries over the past decade.
In Lebanon, the company allegedly used a minor fund to provide gifts, entertainment and hospitality to members of the government between 2010 and 2019, worth $800,000. It also paid bribes in Bahrain and Angola.
