In mid-April, Alina Romanowski wrote a farewell letter to Kuwait, where she held the position of US ambassador, to assume her duties as ambassador extraordinary to Iraq.
Born in the mid-fifties, Romanowsky is the second woman to receive the mission of representing Washington in Baghdad after April Glaspie, accused in some quarters of inciting Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait.
Surrounded by the atmosphere of the military, Romanowsky, because of her family's work in the US army, and her assumption of multiple tasks in the Pentagon, in addition to her work for the US Intelligence Agency, has a special vision towards Iraq.
In a previous message to the Senate, the new ambassador believes that the strategic partnership with Iraq will remain a priority in US foreign policy, and that Iraq is a cornerstone in the region.
In her message, the ambassador made promises about the necessity of economic reform, combating corruption in Iraq, and educational exchange.
As Romanowsky assumes the duties of American diplomacy in Iraq, she will face many challenges, including reviewing the policy of former ambassadors, especially those accused of condoning drying up the sources of financing for armed groups in Iraq, and not being serious about building a clear partnership with Baghdad, as well as engaging in a cat-and-mouse game with the factions. Which carries out attacks from time to time on the embassy headquarters in the Green Zone.
