Shafaq News/ The director of the Iraqi Economic and Political Center, Wissam Hammal Al-Helou revealed, on Monday, a "catastrophic" decline in the occupancy of five-star hotels in the capital, Baghdad, during the past year 2022.
Al-Helou said, in a statement received by Shafaq News agency, "The tourism situation in general, and the hotel sector in particular, is witnessing a low occupancy rate, despite the relative improvement from last year, and the operational rates in some hotels do not match the wages and salaries of their employees."

He added that "the successive governments' negligence of the tourism sector, the absence of actual plans to increase the proportion of tourists in Iraq, and the imposition of almost impossible conditions that prevent nationals of many countries from obtaining Iraqi visas have caused a shortage of hard currency and a decline in hotel occupancy in general and five-star hotels in particular."
Al-Helou explained that "the small number of five-star hotels in Iraq and Baghdad and the failure to build new ones since the eighties of the last century reduced the options for those wishing to occupy and made many foreigners reside in Iraq for a few days only, especially those who come to the country's remote provinces due to the lack of suitable hotels in those provinces. It is necessary to build qualified hotels.”
He continued, "We were counting on the new government and the House of Representatives to restore the Tourism and Antiquities Authority to an independent sovereign ministry and choose a competent and competent minister who manages its balance, puts points on the letters and contributes with specialized cadres in writing real strategies to advance the reality of tourism and hotels in Iraq, which owns many archaeological sites, holy shrines and regions." It has a picturesque nature that can develop the infrastructure, rehabilitate some of it, and promote it in a civilized, non-consumed way that restores the spirit of tourism in Iraq, but unfortunately quotas still pervade this sector, as people who are not concerned with this file are sought and handed over to the top positions.
Al-Helou pointed out that "hotel managements complained in interviews with the Iraqi Economic and Political Center about the lack of government support and the imposition of high taxes, as well as very high prices for electricity, fuel, water and other fees, which made the operational costs very high and exhausted their budget."
He pointed out that "the management of the center conducted a questionnaire through a number of interviews with managers of five-star hotels in the capital, Baghdad.
The hotel occupancy rates for the year 2022 are as follows:
1..Babylon Hotel (Rotana), the occupancy rate is (38%) out of a total of 300 rooms
    2. Baghdad International Hotel, occupancy rate is (30%) out of a total of (170) rooms.
    3. Al-Mansour Hotel, occupancy rate is (25%) out of a total of (262) rooms
    4. Palestine Hotel, the occupancy rate is (9%) of the total (348) rooms
    5. Ishtar Sheraton Hotel, occupancy rate is (6%) out of a total of (207) rooms.
The director of the center pointed out that "we were not able to interview the management of Al-Rasheed Hotel because of the privacy of the hotel in terms of security and its presence within the Green Zone, which prevented us from obtaining an official permit from its management regarding the occupancy rate."
Al-Hilu called on the government and parliamentary authorities to "devise plans and legislate laws that promote tourism investment in Iraq, activate the Iraqi private sector, and open workshops and channels of cooperation with specialized Arab and international institutions to benefit from their experiences and expertise in support of the tourism sector and put greater facilities in obtaining Iraqi visas for Arab and foreign tourists, which enhances revenues." ".
He believed that "there is no way to revitalize the hotel and tourism sector except by opening up to the private sector and supporting Iraqi investors, especially after they contributed to the establishment of a number of three- and four-star hotels in central Baghdad, such as Bellitum, Bloom Norland, Anwar Dijla, Italian House and Al-Shaheen, which are considered successful experiences that encourage support for this sector as a service." investment and tourism movement and to enhance the country's imports.
