Specialists in economic affairs have warned of the dangers of increasing poverty rates in the country, which, according to the Ministry of Planning, amounted to 21 percent, a figure that specialists describe as “dangerous,” stressing that an increase in poverty could affect the economy in general, and lead to a decline in sustainable development rates. And while they stressed the need to move the wheel of investment and attract international companies to work in Iraq in order to employ the labor force and contribute to the eradication of unemployment, they stressed at the same time the ability of the private sector to curb poverty, absorb unemployment and provide livelihoods for many families.
The ministerial platform of the government of Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani adopts a realistic plan that can be implemented by ministries and independent bodies, which includes reforming the economic, financial and service sectors, addressing poverty and unemployment, combating corruption and stopping the waste of public money. And it has social repercussions that led to manifestations of unemployment, poverty and poor services.
And in confirmation of the government's directions aimed at eradicating poverty, the Ministry of Planning revealed to "Al-Sabah" that there is an intention to increase allocations for social protection and the ration card in the current year's budget law.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Abdul-Zahra al-Hindawi, said, "The poverty rate in the country is around 21 percent, which is a high rate. The ministry has worked on developing five-year strategic plans to reduce that percentage, which includes improving the educational situation, addressing the housing and health crisis, and seeking to raise the incomes of the poor." .
Al-Hindawi pointed out that the financial budget for the current year took into account the issue of confronting poverty and reducing the high percentage, as financial allocations for social protection and the ration card will be increased.
The security events and the resulting large displacement cases affected the increase in poverty rates, as a result of the mass migration of many families who were forced to leave their homes, according to the specialist in economic affairs, Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawi, who indicated to Al-Sabah that there is a “structural imbalance in economic activity.” And addressing it has become a national task that the government must expedite,” explaining that “natural disasters and the fight against terrorism have led to widespread migration and loss of property and sources of livelihood, which entails an economic and social burden on families and thus an increase in the number of poor people, in addition to having negative consequences for the overall activity.” Economic in terms of reducing the total demand for goods and services due to the poverty factor and expelling a wide segment of society from economic activity.
For her part, the Dean of the Faculty of Business Economics at Al-Nahrain University, Dr. Nagham Hussein, stated that the poor are the most affected people, as death rates among them reach the highest levels, and they are the lowest-income groups who live in areas exposed to dangers or in fragile housing, indicating that this is a result of economic accumulations, It is caused by the cessation of productive activities, especially industry and agriculture
about investments.
Hussein pointed out that "the poor also suffer more than others from the loss of economic assets, as natural disasters affect farms and livestock and destroy workshops and equipment, which prompts many afflicted families to sell their properties to meet their basic needs."
