Iraq concludes an agreement to import gas from Turkmenistan

The Iraqi Oil Ministry said in a statement - today, Thursday - that it will import gas from Turkmenistan, according to an initial agreement between the two countries to meet part of the needs of the country's electric power stations.
The statement quoted Izzat Saber, Undersecretary for Gas Affairs, as saying, “It was agreed in principle to import quantities of gas to meet part of the needs of electric power stations.”
Ezzat added - after a meeting of a government delegation with officials in the gas sector in Turkmenistan - that "according to a memorandum of cooperation that is being prepared for this purpose, it is hoped that it will be signed before the end of this year, and it includes the proposed quantities and the mechanisms that are adopted between the two countries."
And he talked about the importance of this agreement, which represents an advanced step to expand the horizons of cooperation with gas-producing countries, including Turkmenistan, which is one of the most important gas-producing countries in the region, as he put it.
Iraq imports electricity and gas from Iran with between a third and 40% of its energy needs, which is very important, especially in the summer months when temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius and energy consumption is at its peak.
Iraq is facing difficulty in paying the price of these imports. Because of US sanctions that only allow Iran to get money, to buy non-sanctioned goods; Such as: food, medicine.
The United States is pressing Iraq - the second largest oil producer in OPEC - to reduce its dependence on Iranian gas.
Iraq is still burning some of the gas associated with crude oil production; Because it lacks the facilities to process it into fuel for domestic consumption or export.
