    The Minister of Communications, Hiyam Al-Yasiri, announced today, Thursday, that the federal government has approved the launch of a fifth generation mobile phone license, making Iraq among dozens of advanced countries in this field.
     
    Al-Yasiri said during a press conference held at the ministry building and followed by Al-Eqtisad News, that “with the support, follow-up and direct guidance of Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, the preparation of detailed advisory studies of feasibility, market, technical designs and other requirements for launching the national mobile phone company license was completed,” noting. "Last week, he agreed to release the telephone licence," he said.
    She added that the license will be using fifth generation technology, and Iraq will be one of the first countries in the world to use this generation, and now 54 countries have introduced the fifth generation, including Iraq.
    The Minister also indicated, “The license will be for Al-Salam General Company, one of the Ministry’s companies, and after that, contracting procedures will begin with the world’s leading operator from large international companies to establish and operate the network according to fifth generation technology. After that, the National License Company will be established, the revenues of which will be contributed to the Iraqis, and some of it will be Funds also participate in the company, such as the Employees’ Retirement Fund and the Social Security Fund. They will have stakes and shares in the company.”
    She went on to say that “no less than 10% of the company’s shares will be offered to citizens for the purpose of purchase, and it will be a contribution from many segments of society,” noting that “the designs have been completed and the contracting procedures have been initiated and the global operator has been selected from reputable companies to activate the fifth generation technology.”
    Regarding the “rural optical network,” Al-Yasiri said, “There is a great delay in the network projects, but after the Ministry of Communications took over those projects, the completion rate in the projects increased during the first year of the government’s life, and the extension of one million lines to citizens’ homes was completed, and after When the sufficient number is completed, the landline service will be activated,” noting that “these lines provide Internet service, and after the sufficient number is complete, the landline service will be activated.”
    She stressed that "there is a problem with towers and Wi-Fi service, and because of the monopoly of one of the companies, which is Earthlink, and its monopoly on the market, we are still trying to find solutions and solve the problem," considering that "the process is not easy. We find great opposition from some influential parties who are trying to Obstructing the Ministry’s efforts regarding the problem of towers and Wi-Fi. We will not surrender and will solve the problem of monopoly in the Internet market in Iraq.”
