    It is hoped that the electronic payment system will begin “mandatorily” during the first quarter of next year at all gas stations and end cash dealing, according to what the Ministry of Oil and the Petroleum Products Distribution Company confirm. This is a decision that will require all vehicle owners to issue electronic payment cards for those who do not have them, other than employees and taxi drivers. And others.
    The Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee considered, today, Saturday (November 25, 2023), that relying on electronic payment at gas stations at the beginning of next year is a late measure and must be imposed early, like other countries, noting that it is in the interest of citizens.
    Committee member Ali Shaddad told “Baghdad Today” that “relying on electronic payment at gas stations is a good thing and it is a step that is considered very late in Iraq, as in all countries dealing has become cardboard,” noting that “this step comes for the sake of the citizen, The citizen here will pay the amount required of him without any increase and without any pressure on him to pay more than the official wages.”
    Shaddad stated, “This step has nothing to do with the issue of corruption. On the contrary, it may limit the severity of corruption and bribes that occur in some gas stations by forcing citizens to pay an additional tip. However, the relevant government agencies must simplify the procedures for obtaining any... citizens on the electronic payment card, especially for the segment of earners and non-employees.”
    Earlier today, Wednesday, the Ministry of Oil set January 1, early next year, as the date for adopting electronic payment at all gas stations.
    The Ministry of Oil had actually introduced a number of gas stations on the Rusafa and Karkh sides in Baghdad, with an electronic payment system.
    The Iraqi government is moving to activate the electronic payment system for several reasons, the most important of which is eliminating cash dealing and withdrawing financial liquidity from the street, as specialists’ estimates indicate that more than 90% of the cash supply is outside the banking system.
    It is known in popular circles that fuel providers at filling stations, especially private ones, take between 100 and 500 dinars from each vehicle owner when refueling.
    The number of wheels in Iraq is more than 7 million, and if the lowest possible price taken by fuel suppliers is calculated at 100 dinars, this means that there are 700 million dinars at a minimum that the owners of the wheels lose and that the fuel suppliers in Iraq gain within a matter of days, that is, with every transaction. Refuel all wheels in Iraq.
    Daily fuel consumption in Iraq amounts to more than 40 million liters per day between regular gasoline, improved gasoline, and kerosene, according to the Ministry of Oil. By calculating the average per liter at 500 dinars for various types of fuel, the total money paid for fuel daily amounts to 20 billion dinars per day. In return, fees will be deducted. It amounts to 1% for every refueling operation using electronic payment, which means that the state, banks and electronic payment companies will receive 200 million dinars per day as a result of using electronic cards to refuel.
    More clearly, the fees for each refueling operation are 10,000 dinars. The fees will be only 100 dinars, that is, less than the amounts that are usually taken in tips, which reach 500 dinars.
