A research project in the field of civil engineering at the University of Babylon was able to address a complex problem in the Dokan Dam.
The project supervisor, Dr. Thaer Jabbar Mazhar Al-Fatlawi, a lecturer at the College of Engineering, explained in a statement to “Al-Sabah” that the project completed by the doctoral student, engineer Ali Abdel-Hussein Abdel-Saheb, entitled (Physical hydraulic models for the funnel flume of the Dukan Dam), revealed for the first time the secret of generating loud explosions. What happened to the dam, during the past few years, when it was exposed to flood waves and receded at the top (the funnel) of the dam, which caused fears among those in charge of the dam that it would collapse as a result of its exposure to vibrations resulting from these explosions, not to mention the panic of the residents of the areas near it and their fear of the dangers of its collapse.
He added that the project revealed for the first time the nature of these explosions, which the researcher found were caused by the generation of air pockets in the conveyor pipe, and that they return to explode in certain cases when the pressure in the body of the funnel, which has a maximum diameter of 40 meters with a horizontal drainage pipe with a diameter of 10.25 meters, is insufficient to drain it. To the back of the dam.
Al-Fatlawi explained that the amplification of the intensity of the sounds produced is due to the shape of the oppressive flume, which is very similar to musical wind instruments. He pointed out that the project was able to simulate the flume, through a hydraulic model, in addition to representing it using a computer to determine the cases in which the explosion occurs and suggest operating scenarios to avoid this. the condition .
