    Baghdad / Obelisk Event:
In a step aimed at achieving security and stability in Iraq, the government launched a new project aimed at restricting illegal weapons in the hands of the state. g The plan includes financial offers to arms bearers in Iraq, in exchange for selling their heavy and medium weapons to the government. Despite the great ambition behind this project, it faces many challenges that make its implementation difficult and complex.
This project comes in response to the deteriorating security reality in Iraq, where society suffers from the spread of illegal weapons, which contributes to an increase in cases of crime and attacks. Hence, the government considers the immunization of weapons in the hands of the state a necessary step to achieve security and social peace.
However, the implementation of this project faces major obstacles, as despite the attractive financial offers presented to weapon bearers, armed groups and influential clans do not show interest in money as much as they do in the power of arms. Therefore, it may become difficult to convince them to give up their weapons easily.
In addition, the implementation of this project requires strong and effective legal forces, to ensure that all parties comply with applicable laws and regulations. This includes specific procedures for purchasing weapons and ensuring that individuals' rights are not violated in the process.
The weapon culture that prevails in Iraqi society cannot be ignored, as many individuals consider owning weapons inside their homes a means of defending themselves in the absence of security and stability. This makes controlling the spread of weapons difficult and complex, as it requires continuous efforts to change the culture and enhance confidence in the security and legal agencies.
Retired officer Hussein Al-Khafaji believes that Iraq is living in a state of chaos and instability, and weapons in the hands of individuals pose a major threat to public security.
Activist Ali Al-Kubaisi asks: Is the plan really effective? Armed groups and influential clans do not need money as much as they need force of arms. Implementation requires the forces of law and actual authority, which is not available in light of the current reality.”
It seems that this plan faces major challenges in implementation, as it requires the forces of law and actual authority to force gun owners to cooperate and sell their weapons.
The weapon culture that prevails in Iraqi society cannot be ignored, as many individuals see owning weapons inside their homes as a necessary need to defend themselves in the absence of security.
Chaos and insecurity enhance the need to carry weapons among individuals, making controlling the spread of weapons difficult.
There is a need to develop a strict and effective legal framework that can deal with individuals who refuse to cooperate under this plan, and apply appropriate penalties for those who violate the laws.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced, in mid-January, its readiness to launch a new project to “confine weapons to the state,” which includes purchasing weapons from Iraqis, confirming that 697 arms purchase centers are ready, in addition to an electronic window designated for this purpose.
The Secretary of the Permanent National Committee for Arms Regulation in the Ministry of Interior, Brigadier General Mansour Sultan, said on Thursday that “the weapons seized from citizens amounted to 25 tons,” adding that “the Ministry of Interior is currently searching for medium and heavy weapons, and is in the regulatory stage to register them, and is ready to purchase them.” Of the citizens.”
Uncontrolled weapons in Iraq are considered one of the problems that hinder security and stability in the country, because of their effects on societal security.
There is no official statistics on the number of weapons present within Iraqi society, but estimates speak of numbers that usually vary between 13 and 15 million pieces of medium and light weapons.
