The Ministry of Agriculture is expanding the field of textile agriculture, relying on French and English laboratories, in the production of luxury dates, in order to preserve the genetic characteristics of palm trees and resistance to various diseases.
Ministry spokesman Muhammad Al-Khazali told Al-Sabah: Textile agriculture in Iraq depends on French and English laboratories, because it achieves quality and safety and preserves the genetic characteristics of the palm tree as well as resistance to various diseases, pointing out that it is expanding, including the Engineer Company’s project in Badia. Al-Samawah, which produces more than a million palm trees, and the projects of the holy shrines in Najaf Al-Ashraf and Holy Karbala.
He added that farmers resort to textile agriculture because it achieves many benefits, speed, and luxurious types, such as the Medjool variety, in addition to expanding the cultivation of Barhi and varieties that have good characteristics and high prices in the markets and achieve lucrative profits. Al-Khazali pointed out that the Ministry allocated 24 billion dinars to the Veterinary Directorate to purchase medicines and pesticides, and this is the first time since 2017, noting that veterinary pharmacies have various types of medicines and pesticides. He pointed out that Iraq has achieved self-sufficiency and a surplus is exported to the Gulf markets of some agricultural crops, including tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, dates, pomegranates, and some fruits and fodder of various types and levels, adding that: We import during the season of scarcity as a result of the climate change factor with the presence of a program.
