    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (March 8, 2024), the former director of the Election Commission office in Sulaymaniyah, Hawri Tawfiq, commented on the issue of the presence of thousands of Kurds from Syria, Turkey, and Iran registered as voters in the Kurdistan region.
Tawfiq said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “this issue is completely incorrect, and it is only political talk that has no truth, resulting from mutual political accusations between the conflicting parties.”
Tawfiq added, “To vote, the voter needs to have Iraqi citizenship, a ration card, and a housing card, and all of these documents are not available to refugees,” stressing that “granting Iraqi citizenship requires the approval of the Federal Minister of Interior exclusively, and it is a task that belongs to the Iraqi government, and it is not within the region’s powers to grant citizenship.” ".
Many accusations are made against the regional government and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, by the competing Kurdish parties, regarding not holding fair elections in the region, while it is hoped that the Independent High Commission for Federal Elections this time will supervise the region’s elections for the first time.
