    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Saturday (June 29, 2024), the Baghdad Governorate Council confirmed the presence of waste landfills in violation of environmental safety conditions in the Iraqi capital.
Council member Nora Al-Jahishi told Baghdad Today, "We do not believe that the rise in temperatures has an impact on the issue of the increase in the volume of waste in the capital, Baghdad, but there are large quantities of waste on a daily basis estimated in tons."
She added, "There is a lack of good handling of this waste, especially since most of the sanitary landfills violate environmental and health safety conditions. Also, Baghdad is in urgent need of a waste recycling plant, and this is what we will work on during the coming period in coordination with the local and central governments."
It is noteworthy that the environmental expert, Adel Al-Mukhtar, commented on Saturday (March 23, 2024) that the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, ranks high in “polluted air” among the cities of the world.
Al-Mukhtar said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "Baghdad's occupation of advanced ranks in (polluted air) is a natural thing due to the presence of factories and quarries close to residential cities, in addition to the size of large cars in the capital and the smoke from generators rising in all areas, and this is what constitutes a major environmental danger to the air."
He stated, "Despite all the reports and warnings about air pollution in Baghdad, we did not find any action by the competent authorities to address or confront this danger, and the sources of pollution remain the same, especially since waste yards are spread in different areas, and some of them are burned on an almost daily basis, which "The air is dangerously polluted, and this is what causes danger. Pollution causes many diseases, most notably cancer, the incidence of which has increased significantly over the past period."
In 2022, Iraq recorded more than 37,000 cases of cancer, higher than the previous three years, which ranged between 31 and 35,000 cases, according to government figures.
Iraq came in a new classification in second place among the most polluted countries, while Baghdad came in 13th place globally among the most polluted cities in the world.
