    Economy News - Baghdad
On Monday, the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Dhiab, revealed the details of the discussions with the Turkish side regarding the water file, while indicating the intention to establish water harvesting dam projects.
Diab said during the second meeting of the joint committee between Iraq and Turkey on water, followed by Al-Iqtisad News, that “the Prime Minister considers the issue of water to be the first and most important priority in the government program to bring about a qualitative shift in the file of water resources management in addition to the economic and commercial aspects between the two countries.”
He explained, "There are projects prepared for implementation, such as water harvesting dams and other strategic projects," noting that "the southern regions suffer from a water scarcity crisis, such as the Al-Amara and Shatt Al-Gharraf irrigation projects in Nasiriyah."
He pointed out that "climate changes, especially the summer months, have a clear and significant impact on the water situation in the country and the countries of the region, especially with the increase in temperatures."
He added, "The situation in the Tigris River is good, especially since this year was abundant in rainfall, but the situation is different in the Euphrates River, especially the Haditha Dam," expressing his "hope that there will be assistance from the Turkish side in this regard."
He added, "We have completed the cultivation of rice on a large scale this year, as the area prepared for cultivation reached about 450 thousand dunums, and Iraq is currently cultivating 150 thousand dunums throughout the country."
He pointed out, "The meeting will discuss the outcomes of the Prime Minister's recent visit to Ankara, what was discussed with the Turkish President, and the progress of activating the provisions of the framework agreement regarding water and confronting the challenges left by the rise in temperatures and evaporation, according to global indicators."
He continued, "We have a number of projects that we are looking forward to implementing with the Turkish side to reach safety and overcome the crisis of scarcity that is passing through the country and the region, including water harvesting dams that we are working to bring into service so that there is a fair distribution of the water share among the Iraqi governorates."
