    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, MP Ali Al-Bandarawi, announced today, Sunday (July 14, 2024), the existence of 300 km of areas that are almost uninhabited in the Kurdistan Region.
Al-Bandarawi said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The Kurdistan Region is part of Iraq and protecting the people and property is a national responsibility because our concern for the region is the same as our concern for the southern and central regions and the rest of the other regions in the country."
He added, "Cooperation between Baghdad and Erbil in the security file and securing the borders with Turkey is a strategic necessity and the matter has been discussed several times in the House of Representatives, noting that there are 300 km of land with Turkey that do not include any soldiers and have very complex terrain, asking what capabilities can a single border brigade have to cover these vast and wide areas?"
Al-Bandarawi pointed out the "necessity of having an agreement between Baghdad and Erbil that allows the entry of joint federal forces to protect the region and secure the external borders to ensure the security of the people and their property."
On June 26, the American organization "Collaborative Peacemakers Teams" ( CPT ) recorded the entry of the Turkish army into the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, with 300 tanks and armored vehicles, and the setting up of a security barrier within the borders of the (Badinan) region, referring to the city of Dohuk in the region.
The organization said in its report that Turkish tanks and armored vehicles penetrated the villages of (Ora, Saro, Waradna, Kista, Çelk, and Babir).
As it stated in its report, the content of which could not be confirmed from another source, about 1,000 Turkish soldiers moved between the Turkish military base of (Giri Barukh) and (Mtina) Mountain behind (Bamerni) district within three days, and a security checkpoint was set up between the villages of (Baber and Kani Balavi), and no civilian is allowed to pass except after being investigated and showing the Iraqi civil status identity or the Iraqi national card.
For her part, Shanaz Ibrahim, the wife of the Iraqi president, said via her account on the "X" platform that the recent developments in Dohuk in the Kurdistan Region "bear the fingerprints of the occupation," without explicitly referring to the incursion of Turkish forces.
She added, "Iraq's sovereignty is in danger, and no one is speaking out. In a blatant violation of international law, the armed forces of a neighboring country to Turkey are setting up checkpoints and patrols on our territory in Dohuk, in the Kurdistan Region."
She pointed out that 300 military tanks and hundreds of foreign soldiers crossed into Dohuk, indicating that the Iraqi sovereignty that it had gained with great difficulty is in question.
