The Ministry of Electricity has selected 13 areas in Baghdad and the governorates to install smart meters, which it confirmed will contribute to regulating energy consumption.
The official spokesman for the ministry, Ahmed Musa, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah", followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", that his ministry, after diagnosing the loss of a large amount of energy supplied to citizens, prepared a special plan to address the problems resulting from the irregular connection to the network and the use of old or ineffective electrical meters.
He revealed coordination with the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers and the Parliamentary Energy Committee, with the aim of supporting the aforementioned plan in preparation for the smart transformation in the national network, noting that 13 areas in Baghdad and the governorates have been selected to install smart meters, as a pilot step to generalize them in all regions of the country.
Musa confirmed that the step aims to ration consumption, control loads, and achieve accurate collection to reduce the loss of current during supply, pointing out that there is follow-up and evaluation of the areas in which smart meters have been applied, to develop their work and within the efforts made to support the energy sector in the country.
The Ministry of Electricity had previously confirmed that the project would ensure full equipment and service around the clock.
