Shafaq News/ On Monday, the member of the Parliamentary Legal Committee, Mohammed Al-Khafaji, expressed his dissatisfaction with the "obstinacy and opposition" facing the amendment of the Personal Status Law, especially Article 57 related to child custody, inside and outside the Iraqi Parliament.
Al-Khafaji told Shafaq News Agency, "Unfortunately, there is strong opposition against amending Article 57 of the Personal Status Law, which aims to achieve justice for all parties concerned, including men, women and children."
He added, "This article represents an important step towards preserving the family from disintegration, especially in light of the significant increase in divorce cases, which exceeded 5,000 cases per month, according to statistics from the Supreme Judicial Council."
Al-Khafaji pointed out that “amending Article 57 includes establishing a joint custody system between the father and mother, which contributes to raising the child in a more balanced environment instead of relying on one parent only.”
He stressed, "We will work hard to pass this amendment in the current legislative session, because we believe in the importance of this change to protect the Iraqi family and enhance children's rights."
Referring to the obstacles facing this amendment, Al-Khafaji pointed out that there are “foreign agendas and international organizations that stand in the way of amending the Personal Status Law, and seek to prevent its approval within the House of Representatives by spreading misleading ideas about the amendment law.”
MP Al-Khafaji stressed that "these objections are based on non-Iraqi opinions and biased positions, aiming to obstruct legislative progress in line with the needs of Iraqi society," stressing, "We reject these pressures and adhere to our right to make the necessary amendments that guarantee the rights of all family members."
Al-Khafaji said, "The comments on any law enacted in the House of Representatives are a natural matter, but what we see of intense resistance reflects the existence of external agendas seeking to impose their will on internal Iraqi affairs."
He stressed that the parliamentary legal committee will continue its efforts to achieve this important legislative amendment, explaining that the committee members "will seek to confront any attempts that obstruct their efforts in this regard."
