    [rtl]Baghdad - Iraq Today:

The formation of the “Article 188” coalition that rejects amending the Personal Status Law was recently announced, in a step that expresses widespread opposition to the proposed amendments that aim to amend some provisions of the current law.[/rtl]

[rtl]The coalition includes a group of civil society activists concerned with family and individual rights, as they consider that the proposed amendments may negatively affect basic rights and legal principles that preserve the balance of the family and society.[/rtl]
[rtl]The formation of this coalition comes within the framework of their efforts to defend the current law and demand the preservation of the stability of laws related to personal status.[/rtl]
[rtl]The Article 188 Coalition, defending the Personal Status Law, stated in a press statement: “We are a group of representatives of the feminist movement, civil society organizations, and representatives of a number of political forces, civil and democratic parties, and legal, Academic, social, religious, and parliamentary figures. We declare our categorical refusal to include the amendment to the Personal Status Law in the agenda.” The work of the sessions of the House of Representatives, because this proposed amendment represents a blatant violation of the Constitution and the rights and freedoms contained therein, as well as the fact that it represents a decline in the legal and personal rights that Iraqi women have acquired over the past period, in addition to that it will lead to a societal division (sectarian and denominational), which will perpetuate the tendency This abhorrent abomination has caused great damage to Iraqi society, and sparked wars and divisions from which we are still suffering to this day, and will also produce more public and private family problems.”[/rtl]
[rtl]He added, "The effective law to be amended achieved a great balance of social conditions and personal and religious rights, and formed general acceptance of Iraqi society in all its sects, was fair to women and children, and achieved the public interest. It is also with international laws and conventions related to human rights, to which consistent Iraqi governments have joined."[/rtl]
[rtl]He continued, "Focusing on the controversial Article (41), which is intended to be amended, should not be relied upon to amend a law that affects all Iraqis, as it invalidates other constitutional articles, such as Article (2), paragraphs ( B) and (C), which stipulate not to legislate laws that conflict with democracy, rights and freedoms contained in the Constitution, as well as Article (14) which achieves equality among all Iraqis regardless of any discriminations between them, and Article ( 29) which obligates the Iraqi state to protect the family and society from any violation, as well as prevent violence and economic exploitation, and also obligates The state must preserve its entity and its religious, moral and national values, and together with other unambiguous articles , it holds the Iraqi state responsible for preserving the rights of the family and society and achieving equality among all. Ignoring all of that and putting forward these amendments by certain political forces is an attempt to impose cultural hegemony. certain, at the expense of all members of the Iraqi people.”[/rtl]
[rtl]The statement continued, “Therefore, we see that the ruling political forces that want to propose this amendment at the present time want to consolidate sectarian identity and abandon national identity, and they also want to cover up their great failure to preserve the rights and dignity of Iraqis by providing better economic, educational, and health conditions, or achieving Even if it is a very small part of its electoral promises, while it is better for Parliament at the present time to seek to restore its work in the correct manner by performing Its oversight duties and holding accountable the various officials who caused the waste of public money and tampered with the people's livelihood, and it is also necessary to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives, in addition to searching for Laws that are in the interest of the Iraqi people, and not those laws that cause discrimination and racism.”[/rtl]
[rtl]He stressed, "Isn't it better to follow up on the corruption files that were revealed in what was called the theft of the century? Or those that were revealed in press reports of the theft of 15 trillion dinars? Isn't it better to follow the government approach that promised many issues to the Iraqi people, including reducing the gap?” Regarding the exchange rate of the dinar against the dollar? And also the follow-up of the currency auction file. Where is the House of Representatives' follow-up of the catastrophic failure in the electricity file? What role did they play in the issue of education and the major decline occurring in all of this? The facts are there, and there is no one to act on their behalf, not to mention the rights of the families of the martyrs of the October Uprising and the treatment of their wounded.”[/rtl]
[rtl]He explained that we in the 188 Alliance call for: “

    - That the members of the House of Representatives continue to object to placing the draft amendment before the House of Representatives on the agenda, until it is not presented outright.

    - That all political and societal forces, enlightened clergy, jurists, unions, professional federations, and all An Iraqi responded to the campaign to refuse to amend the applicable law

    - for the Supreme Judicial Council to have its say regarding what was stated in the draft amendment, and to impose executive authorities that have no relation to legislation or the judiciary with constitutional authority -

for the Supreme Council for Women to reject the draft amendment, due to what this council holds “Developmental and human rights goals for women and society.”[/rtl]

[rtl]He stated, “We, the signs of this statement, confirm the formation of the 188 Alliance to defend the Personal Status Law in force.” We are proceeding to take all methods and procedures provided by the Constitution and the law to reject the draft amendment, including mass demonstrations, sit-ins, and legal procedures, in order to achieve our goal of maintaining the law in force.” "It is what is best for us and the community."[/rtl]
[rtl]He called on "all those who reject this amendment to join the coalition, to contribute with us to the broad campaign of rejection of the amendment, to preserve the national unity of the Iraqi people and to strive to reject any projects that reduce citizenship and human rights."[/rtl]
[rtl]The statement added, “In conclusion, we appreciate the prominent role of the media that supports the widespread rejection campaign, and we thank them for continuing to do so.”[/rtl]
