Bloomberg reviewed statistics on how agricultural areas in Iraq irrigated with river water have declined over the past 10 years, reaching their lowest level in the past decade in 2023.

According to official figures and data, the highest area planted by Iraq irrigated by rivers during the past decade was in 2014, reaching 16.2 thousand square kilometers, equivalent to more than 6 million acres. The decline continued to its lowest level in 2019, reaching 6.8 thousand square kilometers, then the area jumped again in 2020, making this year the second year after 2014, as the cultivated area irrigated by river water reached 15.1 thousand square kilometers.

This jump in 2020 came because 2019 was a flood year that witnessed heavy rainfall and the water storage filled to its highest level, then the gradual decline returned to reach its lowest level in 2023, in which the cultivated area depending on river water reached 6.3 thousand square kilometers, which is equivalent to only 2.5 million dunums.

In contrast, while the area irrigated by rivers decreased, the cultivated area irrigated by groundwater increased, especially during the past two years, as Iraq began to move towards groundwater.
