    Economy News - Baghdad
[rtl]Solar energy in Iraq suffers from a lack of sufficient spread, through which the vast natural resources can be exploited in this important sector, which may provide a clean solution to the electricity problem in the country.[/rtl]
[rtl]In an effort to explore the reality of this sector, a number of experts highlighted - during a seminar via video communication - the most prominent challenges that prevent expansion in this sector.[/rtl]
[rtl]In the symposium, titled “Solar Energy Forecasts in Iraq 2025,” Dr. Mohammed Abu Al-Tayeb, Head of Research and Development at Rabban Al-Safina Energy Projects Company, stressed that Iraq represents a promising market in the field of solar energy, given the need for new sources of electricity production as a result of the significant shortage in national grid supplies.[/rtl]
[rtl]However, he explained that Iraq also suffers from several problems, most notably the irregularity of the market, pointing out that there are no national standards or binding determinants compared to other countries, and that all initiatives are the work of individuals, private factories, or farms.[/rtl]
    [rtl]Solar system prices rise[/rtl]
[rtl]Dr. Mohamed Abu El-Tayeb highlighted the high prices of solar systems, explaining that despite the continuous decline in the cost of solar panels, they are still beyond the reach of a large segment of consumers, especially at the level of household consumption, in light of the absence of real government support for their prices, or the existence of a specific mechanism for purchasing the surplus energy produced.[/rtl]
[rtl]He pointed out that the Iraqi market is also witnessing a wide spread of cheap commercial equipment with weak features, due to its low cost and the weak general culture of many consumers.[/rtl]
[rtl]Many of those involved in importing, installing and maintaining solar panel systems also lack real experience, noting that many of them do not have sufficient knowledge of the detailed characteristics of panels, inverters and batteries.[/rtl]
[rtl]While many companies and offices do not have after-sales services, in addition to the lack of the required guarantees for this equipment.[/rtl]
    [rtl]harsh environmental conditions[/rtl]
[rtl]Dr. Muhammad Abu Al-Tayeb pointed out that solar panels in Iraq suffer from operating in very difficult environmental conditions due to high temperatures and the spread of dust and dirt.[/rtl]
[rtl]He called for paying close attention to the types of panels used in installing solar systems, noting that consumers often suffice with simple information about the panel, such as capacity and number of busbars (the passing lines that connect the solar cell to each other), and ignore other important information such as the thermal degradation coefficient for each of the capacity, current and voltage.[/rtl]
[rtl]The vast majority of solar system customers also lack basic solar energy knowledge, and often impose their opinions on the system implementers, resulting in poorly designed and implemented systems that are therefore poorly performing.[/rtl]
    [rtl]The need for government encouragement[/rtl]
[rtl]Abu Al-Tayeb confirmed that renewable energy projects around the world have started with government encouragement, calling on the government to encourage the installation of solar panel systems using various available mechanisms.[/rtl]
[rtl]He also called for regulating the import, sale and installation of solar energy systems, such as legislation for importing solar panels, purchasing surplus from consumers, and solving electricity grid problems that may prevent the pumping of this productivity.[/rtl]
[rtl]For his part, energy consultant Dr. Raed Abdul Mahdi explained that the solar energy sector is currently witnessing a major boom in Iraq, pointing out that there are pioneering government projects that coincide with the national grid.[/rtl]
[rtl]He also praised the great openness of the private sector in the field of designing, implementing and equipping everything related to solar energy in Iraq, adding that there is a great demand from citizens to purchase many hybrid solar systems with separate batteries connected to the national grid to get rid of diesel generators spread throughout all Iraqi cities.[/rtl]
    [rtl]Strategic Challenges[/rtl]
[rtl]Dr. Raed Abdul Mahdi pointed out that the solar energy market in Iraq faces a number of strategic challenges, most notably the need to establish a tariff and administrative structure to regulate electricity and develop distribution networks to accommodate renewable capacities and use smart meters.[/rtl]
[rtl]While the Middle East Sales Manager of one of the global companies manufacturing solar panels, Engineer Ahmed Masoud, confirmed that solar systems in Iraq face major challenges, most notably the high temperatures and the spread of dust, which reduces the efficiency of solar cells.[/rtl]
[rtl]He expected that the distributed electricity market in Iraq would witness significant growth exceeding 80 megawatts during the year 2025.[/rtl]
