The Ministry of Transport is studying the implementation of a project to extend new operational railway lines for passengers and goods at high speeds. The Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah: “The Ministry is currently studying the implementation of a project to extend operational railway lines for passengers and goods at high speeds in coordination with specialized European and regional companies.” He noted that many international companies have submitted bids to implement some of the sector’s projects with the aim of developing and rehabilitating them.
He explained that the project is part of an integrated plan prepared by his ministry to raise the efficiency of all railway lines in Baghdad and the governorates, contributing to the smooth flow of passenger and freight trains, in addition to rehabilitating all lines and maintaining locomotives and passenger cars. Al-Safi pointed out that his ministry is currently discussing the establishment of a new railway line parallel to the current one (Baghdad - Kut - Amara - Basra) and in accordance with the latest technologies and methods used in the sector globally.
