    Economy News - Baghdad
The Ministry of Construction and Housing confirmed, on Sunday, that the Roads and Bridges Department in the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Municipalities has completed 103 projects out of 187 projects in the field of roads and bridges carried out by the government since its inception. The completion of these projects was record-breaking in terms of the timing of completion, as well as the high specifications and integrated engineering construction.
The Director General of Roads and Bridges at the Ministry of Construction and Housing, Engineer Hussein Jassim Kazim, said in an interview with "Al-Sabah", followed by "Al-Eqtisad News": "We have started more than 187 projects, and about 103 projects have been completed with high and standard specifications to maintain their design life, whether they are roads or bridges, and we are working to complete the remaining various projects," explaining that "part of them are projects in Baghdad to relieve traffic congestion, establish main and connecting roads, and rehabilitate expressways, and in the governorates to establish second corridors to connect them and expand some roads such as Kut - Baghdad and establish roads leading to ports such as the Al-Shaib border port and the Badra port, and we also have the Hamrin Bridge as the longest bridge in Iraq, the completion rate of which has reached approximately 70 percent, and this is one of the roads leading to the Al-Mundhiriyah port in Diyala Governorate."
He added, "The Roads and Bridges Department has given great importance to rehabilitating and maintaining the roads leading to Kirkuk Governorate to enhance the network linked to the capital, Baghdad, through a major campaign to rehabilitate the Kirkuk-Baghdad road with a length of (400) kilometers in both directions. The work included scraping the damaged areas and the areas that suffered significant damage were removed and completely reconstructed and paved with multiple layers of asphalt and a modified surface layer to withstand loads and high temperatures."
He pointed out that "the rehabilitation works witnessed the widening of some areas through which the road passes, such as Al-Khalis, Tooz, Daquq, and others," indicating that "the widening works will be with three lanes instead of two, in addition to establishing regular checkpoints on the road, as the previous checkpoints were causing obstruction due to the large ruts resulting from the trucks stopping, so the concrete drawing was used for the entry areas for trucks, and the locations of the checkpoints were determined in coordination with the security forces and the operations command, each according to its responsibility."
Kazem confirmed that "the work includes furnishing, planning and cleaning the bridges that were previously destroyed as a result of military operations. Thus, this vital passage has been restored. There are parts of it that have entered service and others are under construction. It is hoped that they will be completed during the current year, and that the Baghdad entrance that completes this road will be completed in record time and with high specifications."
He continued: "The radical maintenance of the Kirkuk-Mosul and Kirkuk-Tikrit roads has begun, and work has begun on these two corridors linked to the Nineveh and Kirkuk governorates. As part of the Roads and Bridges Department's plan, the rehabilitation of the road linking Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah will begin during the coming period, and it will be within the center's borders, reaching Sulaymaniyah governorate. The construction of the second corridor of the Kirkuk-Mosul road, with a length of 125 kilometers, has also begun, and work is ongoing and in a smooth manner."
Regarding the visitor routes announced by the Prime Minister on the occasion of the end of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, Kazem said: “This plan is witnessing a very close direct connection, as there is a link between Najaf and the expressway, the first phase of which has been implemented and 20 percent completed, and preparations are underway for the second phase from Al-Qasim to Al-Kifl, and in Karbala Governorate there is a road linking the expressway and Karbala Governorate that passes through the Imam District starting from the point of intersection with the expressway from the Imam District towards Al-Hindiyah and from there to the holy Karbala Governorate.”
He explained that "in the field of strengthening the networks linking the city of Karbala, there is a direct rehabilitation work to link Baghdad and Karbala during the coming week, and the road will be widened and bridges will be built at the Dala control roundabout 54 at the entrance to Karbala, and also the inclusion of the first roundabout project in Karbala, the circular road, and it will be started within the plan for million visits, part of which is funded by the department's plan and the other part is funded by the Prime Minister's Office as part of the plan to complete the support for the visit road, and among the most important projects is also the Suwayra project, the second corridor, the Dabuni-Jassan project within the plan, and the construction of the second Al-Numaniyah Bridge and the Al-Fadhiliyah concrete bridge in Al-Amara," and he indicated that "in this field we have also started widening the Karbala-Najaf road with a length of 15 kilometers from the Al-Kifl intersection towards Al-Haidariya and work is proceeding at a high pace."
At the end of his speech, Kazem confirmed that, "Based on the directives of the Prime Minister, work has begun on the fourth ring road in Baghdad, which is considered one of the largest development projects in Iraq in the field of transportation and communications, and international companies will be invited to participate in its implementation."
