Electricity Minister Ziad Ali Fadhil announced on Tuesday that Iraq relies on two sources to import gas, while indicating that energy production will increase next summer if imported gas is stable.
Fadhil said: "The quantities of imported gas reach 50 million cubic meters per day during the summer," indicating that "the ministry will secure 20 million cubic meters per day from Turkmenistan and the rest from the Iranian gas contract, which is valid for 5 years."
He added, "We have diversified the reliance on importing gas to be 20 million cubic meters from Turkmenistan and about 30 to 50 million cubic meters from the Iranian side so that we have two sources instead of one," noting that "increasing our local production of gas, which is the third main source, will lead to a gradual reduction in imported quantities."
Regarding the ministry's electricity production, the minister explained that "our production during the summer reached 27,400 megawatts, and we had a shortage in gas quantities of about 10 million, equivalent to a thousand megawatts," noting that "we will exceed this number next summer after the gas stabilizes."
