    Economy News - Baghdad
The spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Moussa, confirmed that the national system lost more than 35% of its production capacity, as a result of the decline in the Iranian gas supplied by about 60% of the agreed quantities, which led to the shutdown of 5 stations in Baghdad and the south, explaining that the agreement with Turkmenistan stipulated the provision of 20 million cubic meters of Iraqi gas per day at the same prices as Iranian gas.
In a televised statement followed by "Al-Eqtisad News", Musa said, "By the summer of 2024, the production of the electrical system reached 27,344 megawatts, and we do not claim ideal performance or keeping pace with the demand for energy, but we have reached unprecedented numbers, knowing that the volume of demand at peak reaches 48 thousand megawatts."
“Our production today is 17,000 megawatts, while we lost 10,000 megawatts due to fuel shortages, not due to a malfunction in the production stations or transmission lines. We lost 450 cubic meters of national gas production in the southern region due to maintenance, which caused the loss of 3,500 megawatts, in addition to the decline in the quantities of Iranian gas supplied to 15 million cubic meters, while the agreement stipulated the supply of 50 million cubic meters, and this in turn caused us to lose 7,000 megawatts,” he added.
He added, "The national gas supplied from the southern fields returned yesterday and we are trying to recover the 3,500 megawatts that we lost, but we did not recover the quantities supplied by the Iranian side, which informed us that the shortage occurred due to maintenance, then informed us that it was due to the increase in need within the Islamic Republic."
He explained that "we lost 100% of production in the Sadr, Mansouriya, Taji, and Rashid gas stations, while production was limited to Hilla, Hilla Gas, and Najaf Gas, and Bismayah production decreased to more than 50% of its production capacity."
He explained: “We went to the Council of Ministers to address the Ministry of Oil with the aim of providing us with kerosene, as it is possible to operate some stations on this material, and we started doing that, but after a while the Parliamentary Oil Committee addressed us and conveyed to us an objection from the Ministry of Oil and they told us literally, ‘You have run out of kerosene’ and this will cause a crisis in the street.”
He expressed his displeasure by saying: “We do not have national gas, nor Iranian gas, nor kerosene. How will we operate the engines of the production stations? Although we requested to be equipped with 5 million cubic meters of kerosene, this does not affect the volume of demand for the material and is within the production capacity of the Ministry of Oil because it produces 43 million while the volume of local demand is 37 million.”
He revealed that "the Iranian side does not ask us for a single dinar, and we pay our bills monthly by depositing them in the Trade Bank of Iraq, but how to deliver them to the Iranian side has nothing to do with us, and we have penalty clauses regarding fluctuations and delays in pumping gas, but with or without fines, the gas has decreased and we have lost electricity as a result."
He added, "The Iranian side did not inform us in advance of the timing and schedule for the maintenance of their gas system. We were supposed to be informed before starting the maintenance operations, and we do not know when Iranian gas will return to its normal levels until now."
He added, "The current government listened to us well and asked us for proposals to diversify energy sources. We suggested importing gas from Qatar, Turkmenistan and Algeria to create a gas market in Iraq. 'Whoever wants to twist our hands will be spoiled,' in addition to establishing combined cycle stations, solar power stations, and converting government buildings to rely exclusively on solar energy."
He concluded his speech by saying: “We were able to agree with Turkmenistan to supply us with 20 million cubic meters, at a gas tariff equal to the Iranian gas tariff, and at a good price, as the supplied quantities will be transported via the Iranian network, and the Turkmen side pledged to compensate us with kerosene in the event of any problems in supplying the gas, and we will receive the first payment after completing the procedures for opening credits to pay the agreed amount.”
