    Washington: Some of Qatar's demands are difficult to meet

    Date of release:: 2017/6/26

    US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said some of the demands made by the four Arab countries besieging Qatar in return for lifting the blockade would be "difficult to meet."
    Tillerson added that these proposals provide the basis for dialogue leading to resolve the crisis.
    Qatar's foreign minister on Saturday rejected a list of 13 demands from Saudi Arabia and its three allies - Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
    The four countries accuse Qatar of supporting "terrorism", which Doha denies.
    Qatar is under an unprecedented diplomatic and economic blockade for nearly two weeks, while Turkey and Iran are increasing the supply of food and other goods to Qatar.
    The four countries also called on the Doha government to reduce its relations with Iran, close a Turkish military base in Qatar, and last Friday set a deadline of 10 days to implement the demands.
    Among other things, the four countries demanded the closure of Al-Jazeera, which is funded by the Qatari government.
    "The Doha government is examining the Gulf demands," Tillerson said, stressing that "there are important points that provide the basis for an ongoing dialogue, leading to a solution to the crisis."
    The US minister urged the parties to the crisis to sit together to discuss ways to resolve the crisis and cooperate to fight terrorism and extremism.
    "Reducing the tone of escalation will also help reduce tension," Tillerson said.
    After announcing these demands last Friday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer said the Gulf conflict was a "family matter" that his parties should resolve together.
