The United States has described Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a "dictator" threatening democracy in his country, declaring his name on the US sanctions list.
US action came a day after a vote to elect members of a constituent assembly in Venezuela.
US Treasury Secretary Stephen Menuchin said in a statement that the illegal election on Sunday confirmed that Maduro "a dictator ignores the will of the Venezuelan people."
"By imposing sanctions on Maduro, the United States clearly demonstrates its opposition to the policies of its regime and its support to the Venezuelan people seeking to restore their state to a full and prosperous democracy."
"As a result of today's actions, Nicholas Maduro's property under American jurisdiction will be frozen and Americans will not be allowed to deal with it," he said.
"Anyone who supports the imposition of an authoritarian regime in Venezuela will face sanctions," he said.
"Under Maduro, the Venezuelan government has deliberately and repeatedly violated the rights of its citizens by using violence, repression and criminalization of demonstrations."
On Sunday, Venezuela elected a Constituent Assembly that would replace the opposition-controlled National Assembly.
Washington has long opposed the Maduro government, but the statement issued on Monday included, for the first time, a public description of Maduro as a dictator.
It should be noted that the recent decision does not impose any sanctions on Venezuela's huge oil exports to the United States, which is the lifeline of the Venezuelan economy.
