The British Export Credit Agency has announced $ 117 million in funding for General Electric and Inca UK for training to build two gas-fired power plants in Iraq.

"The British Export Finance Agency will support the initial stages of the construction of two 750-megawatt power plants for GE in southern Iraq," the British government said in a statement.

Iraq is a major producer of oil, but the country suffers from chronic power outages in a shabby network that can not meet demand after suffering years of war, sanctions and neglect.

Britain agreed in March to arrange 10 billion pounds ($ 13 billion) in loans to fund infrastructure projects in Iraq over a 10-year period under a program that would benefit only British companies.
