Dozens of residents of Mahaweel district in Babil province against a decision issued by the local government in the province to convert their land to investment.
"More than 400 dunums owned by farmers from Mahaweel district have been transferred to the investment by the local government, which will cause them to lose their source of livelihood and expose them to substantial material losses, even though the land has been owned by farmers' families for decades," said one demonstrator.
He stressed that "the peasants will not give up these lands and will resort to the judiciary to resolve the matter."
For his part, said a member of the Council of Babylon, Riad Adai Abboud: "The Council will form a committee to follow up the issue and reach solutions that satisfy all parties."
