BEIJING (Reuters) - A Pyongyang plane landed in Singapore on Saturday on a rare direct flight ahead of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's visit to the country for an unprecedented summit with US President Donald Trump to discuss ways to end his country's isolation and halt its nuclear program.
The arrival of Air China Flight 330 to Changi Airport prompted speculation that a delegation of North Korean officials had joined a team led by Kim Chang Sun, a close aide to North Korea's current leader in Singapore, to prepare for the summit.
A source familiar with the arrangements for the visit told Reuters on Friday that the North Korean leader was expected to arrive at the same airport on Sunday.
Authorities have stepped up security around the St. Regis Hotel in central Singapore, one of the hotels expected to see the two leaders.
The two leaders will meet on Tuesday in Sentosa Island resort and the talks are expected to focus on North Korea's nuclear disarmament and missile programs in return for diplomatic and economic incentives.
Singapore's Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said earlier on Saturday that everything was ready for preparations for the upcoming summit on June 12 between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.[/ltr]
