The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued a response to the Trump warning, noting that the recent threat of more tariffs violates previous negotiations and the consensus reached between the two parties.
The Dow fell for the sixth consecutive session to erase the index's gains this year, recording a long losing streak since March 2017.
Boeing and Caterpillar were the biggest losers, down 3.8% and 3.6%, respectively.
At the close of trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.1% to 24,700.2 points, losing 287.2 points.
