International Justice today considers Tehran's case against Washington
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Monday considered a
lawsuit filed by Iran to lift the sanctions imposed by the US administration of President Donald Trump on Tehran.
The lawsuit says US sanctions, which are already hurting Iran's already weak economy, are a breach of a 1955 treaty that was little known to the two countries.
There has yet to be a public response from the United States, which will formally respond by oral arguments on Tuesday.
US lawyers are expected to argue that the International Court of Justice should not have jurisdiction over the dispute and that the treaty of friendship no longer applies and that sanctions imposed by Washington on Tehran are in no way a breach.
Oral hearings, mainly requested by Iran for an interim ruling, will continue for four days with a decision to be made within a month.
The judgments of the International Court of Justice are binding but have no power to enforce them and have been ignored in rare cases by some States, including the United States.

International law professor Osama Hussein said the United States' attempt to disavow its alleged breach of the Treaty of Friendship with Iran would be futile if it could not bring down the agreement with written or prior written permission.

"Tehran can now present itself to the International Court of Justice with compelling evidence that the two parties signed a friendship agreement in 1955, which prohibits any attacks of any kind, whether political, military or economic, and thus proves that America Breach of agreements, what will be considered a new scandal added to the scandals of America, and can win the case. "

He pointed out that the United States, on the other hand, will not be able to provide the benefit of dropping or cancellation of the Convention, because this cancellation or drop did not happen from the ground, and therefore can be held accountable for violating the Convention several times over the past decades, and this is why the United States refuses Comment on the case, and defer this comment to tomorrow, to see what will end the meeting today.
The professor of international law explained that the case could be a nuisance to the United States because it would add more burdens to the current US administration to change or clean up the picture, but it was not a threat, given that the court did not have the authority to enforce its decisions. Iran will get a ruling against America, and the latter will ignore its implementation.
