Nearly half of the US military believes their country will soon be involved in a full-scale war, according to a survey conducted by military newspaper Military Time.
According to the study, 46% of US soldiers believe their country will participate in a full-scale war next year. According to a previous survey conducted in September 2017, only 5% of US military expressed this view.
Half of the soldiers surveyed believe their country will not be drawn into a serious military conflict next year. This was higher in the latest survey in September 2017, at 67%.
The majority of respondents (71%) believe that Russia will likely be the main opponent in a possible war, followed by China (69%) in second place. In 2017, 53% of US soldiers believed that the next war would be with Russia, and 45% thought it would be with China.
In addition, the vast majority of US military believes that the main threat to national security of the United States is cyber terrorism (89%). In their view, the US military is not ready to repel attacks in cyberspace.
The poll also showed that the US military no longer sees North Korea as a serious threat, because of Donald Trump's policy of understanding with Pyongyang about its nuclear disarmament.
