Plans to rebuild Iraq's estimated $ 88.2 billion worth of destroyed cities could serve as a breathing space for a new life for Jordan's long-suffering construction industry.
A member of the administrative board of the Jordanian Construction Contractors Union Engineer Abdul Halim Bastanji described a recently signed agreement between Iraq and Jordan to grant the latter reconstruction contracts in parallel with their Iraqi counterparts as a precious opportunity sent from heaven.
"Only two days have passed since we signed the agreement, but I have received later calls concerning the import of relevant books and documents, the contractors are very excited to work again," he said.
Chairman of the Union of Jordanian Construction Contractors Ahmad Yacoub, also expressed his optimism about this agreement, pointing out that the reconstruction sector in Jordan will witness a qualitative leap through this agreement.
According to statistics presented at a donor conference dedicated to raising financial aid for the Iraq reconstruction project, in which a third of the estimated amount was pledged, it was reported that $ 22 billion should be allocated for urgent reconstruction projects.
The conference, which barely covered the needs of the urgent plan, was not at that level. According to several reports following the conference, the reason for this was due to donor reservations about the rampant corruption in Iraq, citing the Transparency Index, which listed Iraq among the world's top 10 corrupt countries.
Mustapha Annabi, the owner of a Jordanian company that intends to participate in Iraq reconstruction projects, says Jordan is not like other countries participating in the conference, which is expected to play a role in providing grants or loans to Iraq. "We will bring in our equipment and our workers and we have no fears that we will be deceived or exploited," Annabi said.
According to the agreement signed between the two countries, the Iraqi Contractors Union has the right to prevent any Jordanian company from carrying out any construction work in Iraq unless it has a valid classification certificate issued by the Ministry of Works and Public Housing and registered with the Jordanian Contractors Union.
"If we face any problem in Iraq, the Iraqi Contractors Union will assume the role of our Jordanian union of contractors and protect our interests," Annabi said.
The head of the Iraqi Contractors' Union Ali al-Sanafi said that after three years of devastating and devastating war to liberate the country from Iraq, Iraq needs Jordanian expertise in the field of reconstruction and water transport and drainage projects.
On the other hand, said the member of the governing body of the Jordanian Contractors Association Said Shayeb, that the Union is very ready to use its resources for use in Iraq, noting that the Union seeks to form an agency through which to provide services to neighboring countries in reconstruction projects and this Convention a good opportunity to facilitate these services.
