"The US is responding harshly to Baghdad's rapprochement with Tehran," an article by Alexander Cherkowski, in Nezavisimaya Gazeta, on strengthening the US military presence on Syria's border with Iraq and Jordan.
The article said: A US military convoy moved from Jordan to Anbar province in western Iraq. Handed over weapons and ammunition to the US Air Force base in the village of 'Ain al-Asad, near Hit, where more than 10,000 US troops are stationed west of Iraq, at the bases of Ain al-Assad and Habbaniyah.
The source told the news portal of the presence of US Marines in these two bases, where they were recently transferred from Syria, and that 90% of US soldiers in Iraq fighters, not military advisers.
The US command also sent a convoy of 60 truckloads of weapons, ammunition and other military goods into Syrian territory and handed them over to the Kurdish militias. This information was published by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in England. According to the Turkish press, quoting sources, the Kurds are planning to attack Syrian government forces soon.
Despite the fact that Washington has not yet begun preparations for a military operation against Tehran, the seriousness of the situation in the region was expressed by the reaction of Iraqi Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr to recent events. He said he did not support a possible war between Iran and the United States, nor the idea of Iraq's participation in the conflict. If Iraq does not take a principled stand on this issue, the conflict between the United States and Iran will have dire consequences. Iraq and its people will not be able to survive the new conflict.
In fact, Tehran and Washington are still reviewing: first, their willingness to defend their regional interests; and second, their willingness, if necessary, to take firmer measures to suppress the enemy, including by force. To date, however, the United States lacks sufficient forces and means to launch military operations against Iran
