(Baghdad: Al Furat News) The head of the Industrialists and Businessmen Association in Turkey and Iraq, Nawaf Kilic, said that Turkish businessmen are making unremitting efforts to raise the volume of Turkish foreign trade with Iraq to 50 billion dollars.

"Turkish brands make up about 90 percent of those scattered in Iraqi shopping malls, as well as being the most preferred among other brands," Kilic said in a press interview.
"The volume of Turkish foreign trade with Iraq exceeded 20 billion dollars last year, and Turkish businessmen aim to reach this figure to the threshold of 50 billion," he noted.
He explained that "one of the most important problems faced by Turkish businessmen working in Iraq is related to obtaining an entry visa to the country."
He pointed out that "Turkish citizens can obtain an entry visa for a period of one month upon their arrival at the border crossings of the Kurdistan region in northern Iraq, but it does not entitle the owner to enter Iraqi areas outside the region."
He continued: "A Turkish citizen, who holds an entry visa from the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, must be able to travel to Basra with that visa."
And he added, "Many businessmen are unable to strengthen their commercial relations with the cities of Kirkuk, Mosul, Baghdad and Basra due to difficulties in obtaining a visa."
"Iraq is the second largest importer from Turkey, after Germany, according to 2013 data, and the trade movement between the two countries witnessed a remarkable decline after the internal problems that Iraq witnessed in 2014, as a result of the emergence of the terrorist ISIS in the region," KILIC said.
He said, "The export figures declined after 2014, to 10.8 billion, 8.5 billion, and 7.6 billion dollars."
He added that "Turkish exports to Iraq have recently managed to achieve about $ 9 billion, at an annual rate."
He added, "Of course, Iraq is a very important partner for Turkey among the neighboring countries. When you wander in the markets and shopping centers, you will see that about 90 percent of the existing brands are Turkish."
And he continued, "Today, all the brands present in shopping malls in Istanbul, Izmir, Ankara, Mersin and Adana are in Dohuk, Sulaymaniyah and Erbil. In fact, we can say that there is a great demand for Turkish brands in Iraq."
New border gates
"The Khabur border gate between Turkey and Iraq is one of the gates that witness the most momentum in commercial traffic around the world, as it provides passage for about two thousand trucks a day between the two countries," he added.
He stated that "Iraq has 9 border gates with Iran, while there is only one border gate with Turkey, indicating that the owners of commercial activities in the two countries are calling for the opening of about 5 additional gates to strengthen the bonds of trade exchange."
He pointed out that "the movement of trade exchange between Iraq and Turkey did not stop during the Corona pandemic, in conjunction with taking the necessary measures in the border areas."
“Turkish contractors were getting projects in the public and private sector in Iraq worth 5 billion dollars annually until 2013,” KILIC noted, but that number decreased due to the difficulties that faced the region with the emergence of the terrorist organization “ISIS” and the Corona pandemic.
He pointed out that "there are about one thousand and 500 Turkish companies currently operating in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, while there are nearly two thousand Turkish companies throughout Iraq."
He added that "the Kurdistan region of Iraq is considered a center for the collection and distribution of Turkish products to all provinces of the country, stressing that Turkish businessmen are working to build more commercial relations with their counterparts in Iraq."
"The commercial relations with the city of Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq are low, compared to Erbil," said Kilij.
And he indicated that "Turkish businessmen are working to strengthen commercial relations with Sulaymaniyah, which is closer to the Iranian borders."
