{Baghdad: Al Furat News} The Parliamentary Economic and Investment Committee revealed a working paper and proposals to address the high prices of foodstuffs in the market, the most prominent of which is the promotion of the Ministry of Trade's import of basic food products, while economists believe that the high demand, the insufficiency of the local product, the change of transport methods and the closure of outlets, are additional factors. I contributed to this problem.

The market has witnessed a steady increase in prices recently, as the price of a bag of rice, despite its distribution within the ration card items, jumped from 35 thousand dinars to 51 thousand dinars, while the bag of beans rose from 42 thousand to 48 thousand dinars, accompanied by a large increase in the price Chickpeas, one kilogram of which reached 4,500 dinars, after it did not exceed two thousand dinars. As for tea, it also witnessed a rise from 35,000 dinars to 42,000 dinars per carton, and the prices of sugar, milk, meat, chicken and oils also increased.
A member of the Parliamentary Economic and Investment Committee, Hamid Al-Mousawi, said in a press interview, "The committee is working to present a working paper and proposals to address the high prices of foodstuffs, especially the basic ones, with the approaching month of Ramadan. It calls for the Ministry of Trade to import the same commodities in the market at prices lower than what is currently in place to deal with problems." Supply and demand, in addition to price control and accountability for greedy merchants.
Al-Mousawi called for "granting import licenses to secured traders to solve this problem and restore prices to normal."
The Ministry of Trade promised to distribute the ration card items into two meals, "a late measure that did not fulfill the purpose because prices have risen for some time and will continue even after the passage of the holy month in the event that the main causes are not addressed."
In turn, the economist Manar Al-Obeidi said that "the insufficiency of the local product of agricultural crops to cover the market need, stopping imports and reducing the value of the dinar against the dollar are all reasons that contributed to the rise in prices."
He added, "The stopping of local factories due to the economic conditions, and the dependence of the existing ones on imported raw materials, increased the prices of locally manufactured goods, especially the manufacturing industries."
As for the deputy governor of Wasit for services affairs, Nabil Shamma, he pointed to "forming a committee to monitor prices in the local markets and compare them with the prevailing prices in the wholesale market."
He stressed that "the committee recommended activating the role of economic security to combat high prices by intensifying continuous rounds in the markets, with announcing a unified price for all foodstuffs and obliging the markets to sell accordingly."
