On Thursday, the UN Security Council unanimously approved an Iraqi request to form a UN team to monitor the parliamentary elections in October .

The Council resolution approved the mandate of the United Nations political mission in Iraq and the United Nations Special Representative, Jeanine Hennis Blasshardt, to "provide a strengthened, robust and visible United Nations team, with additional staff, before the next Iraqi elections, to monitor election day in Iraq. Geographical coverage as wide as possible." ".

Earlier this month, Hennes Plasschaert told the council that the Iraqi people had demanded these elections during mass protests in which some had paid with their lives, and "now is not the time for us to let them down."

She urged Iraqis to adhere to the integrity of the elections, saying that the world will watch to see that the vote is free, transparent and without political pressure or interference.

Anti-government protesters took to the streets last year to demand political change and an end to endemic corruption and poor services in the country. More than 500 people were killed in the protests, as security forces used live ammunition and tear gas to disperse crowds.

Last July, Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi announced that early elections would be held in response to their demands. But the Iraqi Council of Ministers voted last January to postpone polling for a period of four months until October, after the Electoral Commission requested the delay for technical reasons.

The elections scheduled for October 10 will determine the 328-member House of Representatives, who in turn elect the president and prime minister.

In response to the letter of the Iraqi Foreign Minister on February 11, requesting the United Nations to send observers before the elections, the Security Council not only gave the green light to the UN observers, but also allowed the UN Mission in Iraq to provide logistical and security support to the international and regional observers invited by the government Iraqi to participate.
