[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The "Washington Post" newspaper confirmed that the United States is increasingly concerned about the escalation of drone attacks on US military and diplomatic sites in Iraq.
In a report published today, Saturday, the newspaper quoted military officials and diplomats as explaining that the armed factions opposed to the US military presence in Iraq have in some cases moved from missile attacks to the use of small drones flying at low altitudes, which prevents defense systems from monitoring them.
An official from the US-led international coalition acknowledged that these drones are currently the biggest concern for the coalition forces in Iraq.
Officials familiar with the matter confirmed to the newspaper that a raid was carried out by a drone that targeted a hangar belonging to the CIA in Erbil airport, and the official from the coalition explained that the defense system was monitoring this plane before it approached ten miles from the airport, but it later disappeared Radars by changing the flight path.
Another official from the coalition told the newspaper that parts of the wreckage of the aircraft that carried out the raid had been found, and preliminary analyzes suggested that it was Iranian-made.
The officials said that this attack, although there were no casualties from it, caused great concern in the White House and the Pentagon.
Western officials explained to the newspaper that consultations lasted the night that followed that raid to determine how to respond to it, as some American officials, including Brett McGurk, the Coordinator for Middle East and North Africa Affairs in the White House National Security Council, called for consideration of the possibility of taking military steps, but the President's administration Ultimately Joe Biden decided not to resort to this option.
The newspaper pointed out that the other attack by a drone that targeted the Ain al-Assad base in May evoked similar concerns among the leaders of the coalition regarding the change of tactics by the pro-Iranian factions.
The newspaper quoted one of the Iraqi soldiers deployed in the base as saying: "The damage was not great, but the coalition was very disturbed, and they told our leaders that it was a major escalation."
The newspaper confirmed that US officials fear that the absence of effective defenses against drones increases the chances of a new round of escalation in Iraq, noting that the commander of the US Central Command, General Kenneth (Frank) McKinsey, said last week that Washington is trying to find new methods to deal with this challenge, but Without achieving the desired result yet.
The newspaper pointed out that the White House announced last April that it had established a joint working group with Israel to deal with "the growing danger of drones and precision missiles produced by Iran and supplied by its agents in the Middle East."
