Shafaq News/ "Metro" Center for Defending the Rights of Journalists reported on Tuesday that Iraq ranked third as the "worst country in the world" in the impunity index for journalist murders.
The Metro Center said, in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that Iraq, according to international rankings, ranked third after Somalia and South Sudan, in terms of impunity for the killers of journalists, and the impunity of criminals from the killers of journalists, indicating that this puts question marks and questions about the implementation of Laws and their loftiness. It also refers to the attempt to coerce journalists and force them to remain silent in the face of corruption and human rights violations.
Metro Center is a member of the global gathering to end impunity for criminals who committed their crimes against journalists.
The center is participating in a conference held in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, to commemorate the journalists who were assassinated in the Kurdistan region and the rest of Iraq, by displaying their photos and a brief biography of their lives.
According to the annual report for this year of the Committee to Protect Journalists (based in New York), out of a total of (278) assassinations of journalists, (226) of these operations, the killers went unpunished.
According to Metro Center, these assassinations of journalists came in connection with their journalistic work, and as a result of their reports and writings on corruption and crimes by terrorist organizations and groups. Governments and groups involved in corruption and crime sought to retaliate against journalists in response to their reports and writings.
The General Coordinator of the Metro Center "Rahman Gharib" said that their center, in coordination with other organizations (IFEX, ARTICLE 19 GCHR, CPJ, UNESC, IMS and other organizations), participated in the International Conference to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, which is being held in Beirut today. (November 2).
Gharib added that media professionals play an important role in defending freedom of expression, and this comes by ensuring freedom for them in their work, stressing that it is not possible to talk about citizens' rights and the consolidation of democracy, without freedom of media work.
Gharib stressed that impunity, and the escape of justice for perpetrators of crimes against journalists, means a violation of the rights of victims and their families, and this is inconsistent with all international human rights laws.
The Coordinator of Metro Center indicated that the Center stressed on all occasions the necessity of holding a public, open and democratic dialogue governed by freedom of media, pointing out that the diversity and expansion of the media, the freedom of their work, the right to information, publication and different opinions are a condition for this democratic dialogue.
He called "both the Iraqi governments and the Kurdistan Region, to provide the appropriate environment for freedom of media work, in order for the media to take its role, remove all obstacles, hold accountable and punish those who threaten and attack media professionals, and hand them over to justice in order not to impunity."
The United Nations had taken a decision in 2013, dedicating November 2 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, and called on member states of the United Nations to identify an appropriate way to confront the spread of impunity and that it be an obligation that they abide by. ".
The United Nations resolution condemns the attacks and aggressive acts committed against journalists and media workers, and includes a call for member states to make maximum efforts to combat and confront attacks against journalists, end impunity, and provide a platform for accountability and punishment of persons who commit crimes against journalists.
