    Yes Iraq: Baghdad

Today, Saturday, the Ministry of Water Resources confirmed that the recent rains and torrential rains have achieved a slight increase in water storage, noting that it has approved the cultivation of 10,500 dunams of rice, which will produce only 10,000 tons of rice, a quantity that represents only 1% of the local need.

The ministry's advisor, Awni Diab, said, "The recent rains in the country have a very partial and not extensive effect, and although some areas have formed some torrents, they were limited and achieved a slight increase in water storage, which did not have a significant impact."
Diab added that "what has been achieved does not constitute more than half a billion cubic meters of the amount that we can obtain as a result of these rains, whether from the Mosul Dam or the Dukan Dam," noting that "what is released from the two reservoirs is less than what enters them, and hope The Ministry said that this process would continue for a long time in order to strengthen the water reserves to face and control the scarcity and challenges.
He pointed out that "according to the agreements and understandings recently obtained in this field and the plan set by the ministry to confront the coming summer and its needs, the needs of drinking water, human uses, fruit cultivation and orchard watering were secured, which is a controlled issue."
He continued: “As for the issue of planting other crops, this is according to the agreement and understanding with the Ministry of Agriculture, where the water resources determined the quantities of available water, and in light of the existing shortage, as an agreement occurred, and the Ministry of Agriculture set a limit of 10,500 dunams of the rice crop.”
He pointed out that “next summer, the cultivated areas will reach 3 million dunums of orchards, vegetables and some other summer crops throughout Iraq, including a large part that depends on groundwater, but what is specified in the crops that consume greater quantities of water such as rice and rye, an agreement was reached on the cultivation of 10 Thousands and 500 dunums of land on the Euphrates River in Najaf and Diwaniyah governorates.
In 2019, the cultivated area of rice amounted to 645,000 dunums, and the Ministry of Agriculture expected at the time that 600,000 tons would be produced, which indicates that the current area that will be planted will produce only 10,000 tons, which represents only 1% of the local need of one million tons of rice. .
