Washington lifted its hand from Iraq, since Joe Biden received the keys to the White House, something that has been noticed by political circles at home and abroad, but David Schenker, the former US diplomat, speaks about it this time more clearly, in an article published by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and international and local newspapers.
Schenker believes that the decrease in the number of attacks against American installations on Iraqi soil, which Biden boasts about, is not a sufficient measure of the security of US interests, because Iraq today is less stable than it was at the beginning of last year, which poses a threat to those interests.
The former diplomat holds the Biden administration responsible for allowing the political situation in Iraq to escalate after the October polls last year. According to him, it did not make concerted efforts to undermine the influence of Tehran, which is accused of overturning the electoral results through its Iraqi arms.
He adds that Washington did not adequately support its new ambassador to Baghdad, Alina Romanowski, in its efforts to confront Iranian influence, explaining that this abandonment is intentional and not just an omission of the emerging democracy in Baghdad, which has now had to manage its affairs on its own.
In sum, the American diplomat points out that Iran has turned the defeat in the Iraqi elections into a victory, due to the Biden administration's non-interference in the process of forming the Iraqi government, and that Baghdad is no longer, for an unclear reason, a priority for Washington, while it is also for Tehran.
