On Friday, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani issued a number of directives, including the possibility of increasing the number of ration card items in the country.
Most Iraqis depend on the food ration card program since the start of international sanctions on Iraq in 1991 after its invasion of Kuwait.
Al-Sudani chaired a meeting on the ration card, which included the Minister of Commerce, Mr. Atheer Daoud Salman, and a number of officials on this file, according to a statement issued by his office.
At the beginning of the meeting, Al-Sudani stressed the need to pay attention to the ration card, on which the poor and low-income citizens depend mainly, in light of the significant rise in food prices in global markets.
Al-Sudani stressed that the government's duty is to secure food for these groups in a stable manner, by providing the items of the ration card and to be distributed at regular times, in order to achieve security and social stability and alleviate these groups.
The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Commerce to improve the quality of foodstuffs, and to adhere to the distribution dates, and also directed a study aimed at increasing the items of the card and reducing its prices, according to the statement.
The number of foodstuffs distributed to families has decreased significantly compared to the period before the fall of the previous regime in 2003. Government officials say that the reduction in the number of items within the catering program came due to the growing purchasing power of the population after the increase in employee salaries.
About 10 years ago, the Iraqi government retracted a decision to cancel the ration card and pay 15,000 dinars (about 10 dollars) for each person.
