Government figures in Iraq often conflict with international figures and specialized institutions in relation to different sectors, which confuses those interested in monitoring production and consumer data in Iraq in various sectors, and one of the most prominent indicators of conflict is what BP data revealed about gas production in Iraq. over the past year.
According to data from the British company BP, Iraq "produced 9.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas during 2021, an increase of 34.29% over the previous year, in which production amounted to 7 billion cubic meters," noting that "the highest production of gas in Iraq was in In 2019, it reached 11 billion cubic metres.
Iraq's production is 9.4 billion cubic meters during a whole year, which means production of 25.7 million cubic meters per day, which is equivalent to 909 million standard cubic feet (flat), according to BP data.
In the event that these figures are compared with the data of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, a statement by the ministry in September 2021 clarified that the total associated gas offered during 2021 is 2,800 maltifiers per day, of which more than 1,500 briquettes are burned daily, which means that Iraq’s invested production per day will reach About 1,300 milliliters, and by comparing it with the British company's number of 909 milliliters per day, it is clear that the British company's data indicate that Iraq's production of gas is less than what the Ministry of Oil is talking about by more than 30%.
Perhaps other separate data of the British company earlier, may explain the reasonableness of its figures related to natural gas production in Iraq, as its data published last October indicated that Iraq’s consumption of natural gas decreased by 7.3% during 2021.
The company's data indicated that "Iraq consumed 17.1 billion cubic meters of natural gas during 2021, down from 7.3% in 2020, which was 18.5 billion cubic meters and also down by 11% from 2019 when its gas consumption was 19.2 billion. Cubic meters".
By comparing Iraq's production according to the data of the previous British company, which talked about the production of 9.4 billion cubic meters in 2021, and that it consumed at the same time 17.1 billion cubic meters in the same year, this means that Iraq needed to import 7.7 billion cubic meters to compensate for the shortage of its consumer needs.
And the 7.7 billion cubic meters during 2021 represent more than 21 million cubic meters per day, which is actually the number that Iraq imports from Iran per day of gas, throughout the past year.
However, what raises questions is the reason for the decline in Iraq’s consumption of gas by more than 7%, despite the decline in Iranian gas pumping as well, and at the same time the increase in electricity production, as it reached more than 21 thousand megawatts in 2021 compared to 19 thousand megawatts in 2020.
Perhaps what may explain this relatively is the conversion of some electrical stations to the combined cycle, which causes an increase in electricity production without the need for new quantities of gas, as this technology increases the productivity of a single electrical station by 40% without consuming more gas, as well as The Ministry of Electricity resorted to operating the stations with liquid fuels such as black oil supplied by the Ministry of Oil.
