Baghdad / Obelisk: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) announced on Friday that international prices of food products continued to decline in December, and even fell below the level they were a year ago, at the end of a year that witnessed a rise in prices.
The FAO Food Price Index, which is used to measure the monthly change in international prices for a basket of basic food commodities, declined by 1.9 percent compared to November 2022. This is the ninth consecutive decline after the record rise recorded in March following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. .
This indicator reached 132.4 points in December, “which is 1% lower than its level recorded a year ago. However, for 2022 as a whole, the FAO Food Price Index averaged 143.7 points, which represents an increase of 18 points, or 14.3 percent, compared to 2021.
"It is good that food commodity prices have calmed down after two years of extreme volatility," said FAO Chief Economist Maximo Torero, adding that it was necessary to "stay vigil and focus on alleviating global food insecurity."
The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index averaged 6.7% down from its level in November “and reached its lowest level since February 2021. The decline in the index in December is due to a decline in the international prices of palm oils Soybeans, rapeseed and sunflower seeds,” according to the FAO.
The cereal index declined by 1.9 percent compared to November, “as the current seasons in the southern hemisphere boost supplies and competition among exporters remains strong,” the organization said.
In Iraq, foodstuffs are still at their high rates, as the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Iraqi dinar is witnessing a continuous and noticeable rise, which led to disruption of commercial activity in the local markets, and contributed to the rise in food and consumer prices, especially in the wholesale markets in the Jamila commercial area in Baghdad.
